Who turns to entrepreneurship later in life? - Push and pull in Finnish rural and urban areas

2014

Age is an important factor in entrepreneurship. The paths into entrepreneurship at a later age may be varied. Self-employment in later life may be either a form of partial retirement or a career option. Older individuals may also be pushed into self-employment. The focus of this paper is on the career choices of older individuals and their background motivations in Finland. The purpose is to analyse the factors and motives in terms of the push and pull dichotomy that lead individuals to enter self-employment at older ages in different types of labour markets in Finland, viz., rural and urban areas. Although some studies have focused on transitions to self-employment among older workers, que…

Migratory transnational flows as analytical tool for planning in the post-metropolitan transition of Italian urban regions

2015

The increasing of international migratory flows is one of the main socio-cultural phenomena associated to the post-Fordist restructuring, within post-modern city. Different authors, involved in the debate on post-metropolitan transition, recognize that these phenomena destabilize previous planning models and at the same time represent a new challenge for building multicultural metropolis (Sandercock, 2000) and for resisting to the prevailing neoliberalism, among other active approaches (Soja 200). According to Soja, indeed, postmetropolis is the spatial - although transitory - result of new socio-spatial transformations of the cities that is characterized by a high and new level of socio-ec…

Housing affordability nelle regioni urbane. Una proposta metodologica per definire il reddito soglia

2018

Within context of urban disintegration and social fragmentation, the concept of post-metropolis induces to critically consider the typical dichotomy between centre and periphery. Even in marginal areas where metropolis did not develop according to traditional stages and classical models, the traditional analytical categories are no longer able to interpret the widespread phenomenon of regional urbanization. In any case, the large urban regions are recognized by some authors not only as driving-force of the global economy, but also as the main sources of inequality and of social/environmental injustice; places where the gap between high and low income of social groups has been exacerbated. I…

Housing Affordability for Urban Regions

2021

Urban regions are recognised as driving forces of the global economy as well as the main sources of social inequality. In recent decades, particularly, housing access has become a serious problem, not only for the most disadvantaged population, but also for the middle class, as a result of economic crises and despite of prices decline in the housing market. In urban regions with high population density, some social groups face problems of housing affordability that depend not only on market prices but also on income availability. The contribution proposes a methodology for income-threshold assessment through a combination between the ratio income and the residual income approaches, which is…
